Medical Students
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UC Irvine welcomes both UC Irvine medical students and externs to rotate with the department. We enjoy having medical students work with us and have developed a comprehensive curriculum that will get you involved and teach you the physiology and pharmacology involved in perioperative care.
About the medical student rotation at UC Irvine :
- The department offers a two week rotation and a four week rotation. Both rotations are structurally similar, but note that students on the two week rotations will receive only half of the medical student lecture series.
- The rotation is clinically focused and hands-on. You will be expected to participate in OR setup, patient preparation and interviews, anesthetic management, and procedures. Additionally, there is a daily discussion covering a chapter in Miller's Basics of Anesthesia. Our hope is that at the end of a four week rotation you have a solid understanding of basic anesthesia practice, whether you plan to be an anesthesiologist or as an adjunct to other specialties.
- In the afternoons after the lecture you have independent study time. We encourage students to return the OR for interesting cases and to use the time to prepare for the lecture the following day.
- You will need to reschedule if you miss more than 6 days of a four week rotation. Any absences should be approved by the medical student coordinator in advance.
