Dr. Michelle Fortier Awarded $729K Grant from the American Cancer Society

Ocotber 4, 2012

Dr. Michelle Fortier has been awarded a $729,000 prestigious career grant through the American Cancer Society (ACS).

The Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research from the American Cancer Society provides support for mentored research to junior faculty in order to develop into independent investigators in cancer control and prevention. Dr. Fortier ‘s proposed project involves development of an innovative pain and symptom intervention, called Pain Buddy, for children undergoing treatment for cancer. Pain Buddy is a web-based application that can be used on any mobile device and consists of a pain and symptom diary and skills training intervention. Children will complete daily diaries of the frequency and severity of their symptoms and the diary information will be immediately available to the health care team via an electronic server so that prompt intervention can be provided when needed. In addition, the application will provide cognitive and behavioral skills training to children for pain and symptom management. The funding from ACS will provide Dr. Fortier support for five years to complete development and efficacy testing of the Pain Buddy intervention and will be mentored by Dr. Zeev Kain through the UCI Center on Stress and Health.
