Joint Surgical Home Launched

October 9, 2012

The VBP Program, as required by the Affordable Care Act, is the beginning of an historic change in how Medicare pays health care providers and facilities.

For the first time, hospitals across the country will be paid for inpatient acute care services based on care quality, not on the quantity of the services they provide. October 1st was momentous date for hospitals, marking the start of the Medicare Hospital Inpatient Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program.

In part to answer the needs of VBP programs, the UC Irvine Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care has launched a cutting edge initiative to bring the Surgical Home Concept to UC Irvine and the entire UC System. We have selected the Total Joint Replacement Service Line as our targeted beginning for this concept. We believe as anesthesiologists we are becoming more and more involved with the patient’s complete surgical experience from the decision to operate to discharge and beyond. In this role we are in a unique position to see the patient’s surgical experience as a whole across the entire continuum thus providing high quality patient preparation, intraopertive management, post operative care and pain management while at the same time shortening the length of stay and decreasing any need for re-admission for complications.

The OR personnel took the Joint Surgical Home from concept to realty. Working with new orthopedic joint surgeon Dr. Schwartkopf, the OR team rehearsed for the first patient. This pathway will serve as a model for other pathways at UC Irvine and for the entire UC Healthcare System.
