Surgery at UC Irvine

It's normal to be nervous about an upcoming surgery. Our job as anesthesiologists is to ensure your comfort and safety both during and after the operation.

Surgery at UCI

When you arrive in the preoperative holding area, one of the nurses will check your paperwork and verify your identity and the procedure. Shortly thereafter the anesthesia team will meet you and review your medical history. From there they will be able to discuss the options for anesthesia, and the pros and cons of each. We will do our best to work with you and your preferences. Once the anesthesia plan is set, your team will give you some sedation to help you relax a bit before going to the operating room.

During the operation, your anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will be with you at all times. Our role is keep you safe and comfortable and we will monitor you throughout your time in the operating room.

When the surgery is done, we will transport you back to the recovery room. The nurses there will help us keep you comfortable. Depending on the location of the surgery, your family will be able to join you in recovery or shortly thereafter.

Please review our fasting guidelines, and note that there is additional, more specific information available in the Frequently Asked Questions.
