Pain Management

The University of California, Irvine Pain Medicine Division is an advanced center for the evaluation and treatment of all forms of pain.  Our clinical mission is to enhance patients' quality of life through a decrease in pain and an improvement in the ability to enjoy daily activities. We attempt to accomplish this by taking an integrated approach to pain management, providing consultation and treatment to individuals with both acute and chronic pain. Each patient is prescribed an individually-tailored treatment plan after having been thoroughly evaluated by our skilled team.  Our academic mission is to help future leaders in pain medicine advance through developing knowledge and skills in managing patients in pain while practicing excellent patient care and participating in a stimulating research environment.   The program has a tradition of providing students in training with the broadest experience in pain medicine, including appropriate applications of traditional and novel analgesics and state-of-the-art interventional procedures.

Our patient population ranges from adults to children in acute or chronic pain.  We treat a wide variety of pain conditions, acute or chronic lower back or neck pain, vertebral compression fractures, arthritis, peripheral neuropathies (diabetic and nondiabetic), headaches, complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, and cancer pain.

We offer a broad range of treatment options from medication management to interventional procedures and integrating non-conventional options (biofeedback, acupuncture, herbal therapy).  The types of interventional procedures we specialize in include epidural steroid injections, facet injections, radiofrequency ablation of facet nerves, various joint injections, sympathetic blocks (stellate, lumbar, celiac, superior hypogastric, ganglion impar), discography, IDET, and vertebroplasty, implantable pain pumps and spinal cord stimulators.
