The multidisciplinary investigators at CAPH are driven by a common goal: that of improving the overall quality of life in children and adults before, during, and after surgery.

The process of clinical research evokes a good deal of passion and focus at CAPH, and investigators work to excel in a rigorous methodological approach. We engage in cutting-edge research to strengthen current evidence-based practice guidelines for managing patients undergoing invasive medical procedures in the perioperative environment. To this end, we have targeted the understanding and reduction of the perioperative stress response as our overall objective. This overall objective interfaces with three aspects of CAPH that make our research unique:

A Unique Multi-disciplinary, Biopsychosocial Approach Integrating Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, Health Psychology and Psychoneuroimmunology

The problem of perioperative stress is a large-scale, complex issue impacting millions of patients per year. A multidisciplinary approach can accelerates research progress, hasten application of research findings, increase rigor, and improve external validity.

Family-Centered Care as a Primary Aim

Central to CAPH is the importance of the family. In 2001, the Institute of Medicine underscored the importance of family-centered medical care. Our research seeks to examine ways to support, strengthen and involve the family unit throughout the perioperative process.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).

We believe that there is value in exploring non-traditional approaches to medical problems. Our strengths in rigorous methodology coupled with our unique multidisciplinary approach provide an ideal framework within which to pursue this passion.
